It’s amazing what millions of dollars and hundreds of helping hands can accomplish in only two days. Just take note of LaVilla’s most recent development, a Trinity Rescue Mission shelter for women and children that broke ground and topped out over the weekend.
Promoted as a “Raise the Roof” campaign, Trinity Mission executive director Gene Pruett said it was important to show the support of the project by proving that speedy progress could be made on it.
“This was a one-year campaign,” he said, “from fundraising and preparing for this day. To see it come together is wonderful. It’s great to see the community’s builders give back like this.”
Pruett praised the efforts of the more than 200 volunteers who helped build the shelter, calling them “very generous.”
Florida Building Materials, W.W. Gay, North East Florida Builders Association and KB Home were among the many local development companies that donated money, materials and manpower to the $2 million capital improvement project.
“It’s overwhelming,” Pruett said. “We’re making a positive impact in the community and it’s wonderful to see the private sector embrace that concept and want to help.”
When the 14,000 square foot shelter is finished in mid-November, Pruett said up to 96 women and children can be accommodated there. Full-time jobs will also be created.
