Credit John Meserve with at least two things: the man is dedicated and able to wear many hats. A military man who retired after an almost 30-year tour of duty, the executive director of retirement community Fleet Landing and Mayor of Atlantic Beach, Meserve stays busy, but said he enjoys the rapid pace. “There’s a lot going on, but I usually manage to keep a pretty balanced schedule,” said Meserve from his open and airy office at Fleet Landing in Mayport. “My days are spent here at Fleet Landing and the beach mayors usually meet at night. It hasn’t really ever been a problem.” But Meserve expects to lighten his load later this year. Despite having one term left to seek reelection, Meserve said he plans to step down. “I’ve enjoyed it but it’s time,” he said.
The military theme runs rampant in Meserve’s workspace. Keepsakes and photos cover the walls. A bookcase is crowded with even more. “Honestly, I don’t put a lot of effort into decorating my office,” he said. “All I’ve done is fill it with junk that’s been given to me over the years.” Rather, Meserve said he’s more concerned with functionality. “I just need to be sure that I can have meetings in here, communicate when I need to,” he said. “With all of the residents and staff we have here, we don’t have a problem staying busy.”
