• If you plan to bring your boat downtown for the July 4 fireworks, be sure to get where you need to be before 9 p.m. By then, the St. Johns River will only be open to water taxis and 30 minutes later it will be entirely off limits until after 10 p.m.

• A few nuggets from the meeting of the South Council of the Chamber of Commerce, where Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver was the guest speaker. South Council VP Jennifer Lumbag introduced Weaver and got a big laugh when she said he and wife Delores of 49 years had a two year-old son (she meant grandson). Weaver said he expects this year’s defense to be in the top three in the NFL, if not the best. He also said seventh round pick Chad Owens — the 5’ 7” receiver from Hawaii — “is the real deal and will do wonderful things for us.” Weaver was also asked the biggest difference between the business world and the NFL. “In the NFL, they treat money like monopoly money,” was his response.

• Friendship Fountain seem a little less perky lately? According to Pam Wilson at the Parks, Recreation and Entertainment Department, two of the three pumps in the fountain’s pump house are not working. The city should know within a week if the pumps need to be repaired or replaced.

• The Russian Arts Foundation is hitting up Mayor John Peyton and wife Kathryn up for money to help sponsor the Russian National Orchestra’s July 31 performance in Napa Valley, Calif. The tie is, Peyton’s a member of the Jacksonville Symphony Association and a past JSA board member.

• One City Council member who for sure won’t be attending Thursday night’s installation ceremony is Art Graham. He’s on vacation in Denmark until July 11.

• Public Relations firm burdette/ketchum (formerly the Burdette Agency) has moved into their own building in San Marco on Kings Avenue. They bought the former Spiller Vincenty Gallery building and send out neat announcements with a half-peeled back can of sardines on the front and a rendering of the new building inside.

• Jacksonville — and Florida — will play host to a Sister City delegation from Ningbo, China. The three delegates plan to attend the installation ceremony of new city council officers Thursday night and are scheduled to visit St. Augustine and Disney World this weekend. There will be a

reception at 11 a.m. Friday in the China Business Education Center at the Chamber of Commerce building.
