Big money going into judicial races

The area’s 12 judicial candidates have exactly two weeks before the Sept. 5 election and in addition to being into full campaign mode, they are also heavily into the fundraising efforts.

According to the latest campaign contribution figures from the Duval County Supervisor of Elections Office and the State Elections Office, several of the candidates have topped the $100,000 mark either through contributions or personal loans to their campaigns.

In the County Court, Group 17 race, Virginia Norton has $148,537 that includes a $100,000 loan. Steven Combs reported $132,084, most of which is a nearly $100,000 loan to his campaign. Kevin Sanders reported $55,733 worth of contributions including a $26,000-plus loan while Dawn Hudson has raised almost $23,000.

In the Circuit Court, Group 33 race, Jeff Morrow has raised $61,945 with a $50,000 loan to himself. Libby Senterfitt has raised $67,814 and added another $12,500 in the form of a loan to herself.

In the Circuit Court, Group 34 race, Jack Bettman has raised $30,120 with a $6,000 loan. John Merrett has only raised $7,180 but he did loan his campaign $106,000. David L. Thompson has raised $5,500 and loaned himself another $5,800. Wes White has $36,000 in his campaign account, all of which came in the form of a loan.

In the Circuit Court, Group 35 race, Thereasa Hunnewell-McCaulie has raised $16,600 while contributing another $88,520 in the form of a loan. Dan Wilensky has raised $56,025 and loaned himself another $50,000.

A majority of the contributions to all of the candidates have come other attorneys. Detailed campaign accounts can viewed online at either the Supervisor of Elections Web site or the State Elections Office Web site.
