Members of the Northeast Florida Builders Association have partnered with HabiJax, the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, to provide 1,000 homes nationwide in local communities and hurricane-affected areas this month.
The NEFBA/HabiJax portion of the build will consist of 30 new homes on a 19-acre area in McNair Park, a 94-home HabiJax community on the site of the former Brentwood public housing complex off Golfair Boulevard and Interstate 95. In addition to 94 single-family homes, the area will include 228 apartment units, a senior living center and a community center.
All 1,000 homes, including 30 in Jacksonville, will be built in one week - building 1,000 homes in one week is unprecedented in the history of affordable housing.
“What a great opportunity this is!” said Greg Matovina, president of Matovina and Company and NEFBA past president who is coordinating the event for NEFBA. “Not only are we as an association giving back to the community, we are helping raise public awareness on the important issue of affordable housing.”
Matovina said 23 NEFBA builders will participate.
“That’s pretty remarkable when you consider how extremely busy builders are these days,” Matovina said. “But, it’s typical of the response we have from our members when there is a need.”
Jerry Linder, current NEFBA president and president of The Vintage Group, agrees.
“As long as I’ve been a member of NEFBA, I’ve always been impressed with the generosity and eagerness of builder members to lend a hand,” Linder said. “This is a gift with a long shelf life, because the new homeowners will benefit from this effort for many years to come.”
Completion of the 30 homes will bring the total of HabiJax homes by NEFBA to 202.
Who’s building
These NEFBA members have committed to build one or two homes during the week of June 5 in partnership with HabiJax and the nationwide building blitz.
