• Jacksonville Jaguars’ long snapper Joe Zelenka and some teammates raised almost $40,000 for The Ronald McDonald House in his annual Joe Z. Celebrity Bowling Classic.

• Closed: Sneakers, the venerable sports bar across from Craig Field on Atlantic Boulevard.

• If you’re missing the president-elect of your Rotary Club, he or she probably is in Denmark. That’s the site of the Rotary International convention this week and incoming presidents get to go.

• The big San Jose Baptist Church had an 18-month national search to replace its senior pastor, who went to New York. They ended up with 52 candidates and a lot of paperwork, and “then God told us what to do,” said Maria Corby, who chaired the search committee. The word: hire the man who’s been your interim pastor. “We originally didn’t consider him and he didn’t apply for the job,” said Corby. “I guess God spoke to both of us.”

• TV-12/25 has put out two versions of its 2006 hurricane guide: an English version and Spanish version.

• Attorney Amanda Rolfe Tise is the Exchange Club of Jacksonville’s new 2006-07 president. The club’s recent focus is child abuse prevention. They help by raising money for the First Coast Families Center.

• Superman is even getting into baseball as the Jacksonville Suns have Superman Night on Tuesday. Anyone wearing a Superman costume gets in free.

• Sept. 10 may seem like a long time away to most but not for gamblers — the Jaguars have been installed as a three-point betting favorite for their game here that day against Dallas.

• Jack Daniels has a curious approach to getting City Notes published. Daniels, the former head of the Professional Association of City Employees who is running for the City Council Dist. 11 seat, came into the Daily Record building a few days ago. When a reporter came down to speak with him, he didn’t explain why he was there. Instead, he held out a stapled letter and told the reporter, “You’ll have to make copies.”
