• City Council elections are a year away but it’s never too early to start raising money and former School Board chair Cheryl Grymes has a biggie Thursday night. She’s running for the District 1 Arlington seat (Lake Ray is term limited) and St. Joe CEO Peter Rummell is having a get-together at his Riverside Avenue offices.
• The Lamm name is prominent in sports because David Lamm is the city’s top-rated radio talk show host and his son, Alex, is in the trenches, too. He runs a specialty advertising company and found time last year to place third among Gator Bowl committee members in ticket sales.
• We lost a golf course this week with the closing of the Course at Westland on the west side. The land will become (what else?) a housing development.
• Just because we lose one course doesn’t mean that golf is going backwards here. A local promotion group says that over 90,000 golf bags went through the airport last year, up about 15,000 over 2004.
• Apologies to Erin Isaac of gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist’s campaign office. We misidentified her in a City Note Monday.
• The U.S. Commission for Scholastic Assistance wants potential and current students to know they have scholarships. Much of private sector financial aid goes unused because the parents and students do not know how or where to apply, according to the commission. • Give up the funk: University of North Florida’s Osprey Productions is bringing George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic to town April 8 for UNF’s Earth Music Fest at the school’s soccer stadium. It’s a free outdoor concert with guest opener Fusebox Funk, a local band. For more info call (904) 620-2460.
• The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation announced its inaugural Ladies Night Out fundraising event to benefit CFF. The event is April 7 from 6 p.m.-midnight at the Terrace Suite at Alltel Stadium, and will offer manicures, massages, a fashion show, karaoke, “chick flicks” and more. The cost is $50 which includes heavy hors d’oeuvres, beverages, dancing and pampering. • The family of Otis Williams III has filed suit against the City and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in the amount of $7.5 million. Williams died Nov. 4 when he was arrested by officer Robert Rose and allegedly beaten to death.
• The Housing Partnership of Northeast Florida will hold its annual Paint the Town week April 22-29. This year’s focus will be on neighborhoods in City Council member Reggie Fullwood’s district.
