• Can’t make Tuesday’s City Council meeting? Watch it on the Internet for the first time. A Canadian company will temporarily install software that will permit the first streaming video of a Council meeting. Call the Council offices for more info, 630-1452.
• It’ll be pretty tough to sneak into the Benefactor tent or Island Club at this year’s Players Championship. Patrons will have to present their tickets and they’ll get wristbands to allow re-entry.
• Even when he’s mixing metaphors JEDC Commissioner Bob Rhodes has a way of getting his point across. Commenting on JEDC plans to implement downtown’s masterplan, the former head of the Downtown Development Authority said: “Whenever we talked about an action strategy we were met with a collective community yawn. Hopefully now we can make that yawn a reality.”
• How long have attorney and WorkSource Chairman Jake Schickel and JEDC chair Ceree Harden been working together on workforce development? Harden said when they started, “Jake’s mustache wasn’t even gray.”
• Speaking of WorkSource, president Bruce Ferguson said public transportation should be improved to help connect workers and jobs. For instance, if you’ve ever thought about loading your bike onto a JTA bus, you’ll need to get a permit first. Where can you get a permit? JTA holds classes every third Saturday morning.
• If the JEDC recruits businesses like it comes up with euphemisms, Jacksonville’s skyline might soon look like New York’s. The JEDC has already coined the term “public investment” to refer to incentives. During its Thursday meeting, commission members were freely using the term “emerald necklace” to refer to Hogan’s and McCoy’s creeks.
• The JEDC must have liked Ron Littlepage’s Thursday column. During the general meeting, copies were provided next to the meeting agendas.
• The Institute of Management Accountants wants you to know its vision is for everyone. IMA, which serves as an association for management accounting and finance professionals is hosting a plant tour of Gustafson Dairy in Green Cove Springs April 27 at 1:30 p.m. It’s for members and non-members. • The Northeast Florida Engineers Week Committee honored Terry Hull as the Northeast Florida Engineer of the Year for 2006. Hull has spent his entire career of more than 20 years at Taylor Engineering where he has practiced water resources engineering including coastal and environmental engineering. He now serves as Senior Vice President and has been instrumental in the company’s growth from five to more than 75 professionals.
• If you ever doubt the speed of the U.S. Postal Service, be thankful you don’t live in Russia. A Christmas card to Mayor John Peyton from Mypmahck, Russia is postmarked Dec. 19. Peyton got it last week.
• The new Courthouse parking garage will have 400-450 spaces available for daily use. According to Bob Carle of the City’s parking division, the rest of the spaces will be monthly spots and will go for $80/month plus taxes.
• We are closing in on having a Veterans cemetery. The two Lannie Road sites have both passed environmental inspection. One is City owned and is 568 acres, the other private and it’s 724 acres.
• Henrietta’s in Springfield has closed. Word is it will reopen this week as a place called Nosh.
