Florida Coastal School of Law will graduate its largest class ever Saturday when 216 attorneys-to-be pick up their diplomas and school Dean Peter Goplerud couldn’t be happier.
“I’m very excited,” he said. “This is always a good time of the year. The next class could be considerably bigger, though, close to 300.”
While Goplerud is pleased with increasing enrollment and expanding graduating classes, he’s also quick to point out that the 10-year-old school is determined to grow for all the right reasons.
“We have targeted growth over the last several years as well as continued improvement of the credentials of the incoming class, the faculty and the staff,” said Goplerud. “We thoroughly deal with every aspect of growth of the student body. I think growth for the sake of growing is not what we are trying to accomplish.”
Graduation from any college contains both an element of excitement and relief. Goplerud says that is especially apparent at law school graduations.
“It’s an exciting day and I am also happy for the families. They had to put up with a lot over three or more years,” he said. “It’s not an easy time. It’s a stress-filled time and it can be an emotional roller coaster. We tip our hats to the families of the students.”
Goplerud said the 216 graduates who will walk at the University of North Florida’s Arena won’t have long to enjoy the moment. There are bar exams to study for.
“They get about 24 hours of relief, then they have to start studying for the bar exams,” said Goplerud. “The bar review courses start the Monday after graduation. Those that stay in Jacksonville will take the review course here at the school. But, there are other locations around the state.”
