• According to the store’s Web site, Moon Colony Razorblade, is dead, “effective next Monday.” The record shop located Downtown at 114 East Adams St. will be selling new and used CDs and DVDs at reduced prices and will be giving away one piece of whatever’s not for sale (like posters, random fixtures, abstract emotions, etc.) to each customer for free with any purchase. Saturday is the last day that items will be on sale before shutting down.
• Most City offices will be closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving: City Hall, the Annex, the Ed Ball Building, the Courthouse, all public libraries and several others. If your normal garbage collection day is Thursday, it’ll be Saturday this week.
• Sheriff John Rutherford was an impromptu guest speaker at Wednesday’s Northeast Florida Builders Association’s monthly board meeting. He was there to ask for the builder’s help and see how the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office can help their industry after the rash of burglaries from construction sites. Operation Ice Cold has been implemented to find ways to combat criminals stealing copper wire, refrigerators, air conditioning units and other household appliances off job sites. Rutherford said that 1,022 thefts were reported from Jan. 1 through the end of August in Jacksonville, amounting to more than $3.5 million of property loss. “And that’s just what was reported,” said Rutherford. “We want to come up with a good strategy to knock these bad guys out.”
• Six students from the University of North Florida’s each received a $2,000 scholarship from NEFBA’s Arnold Tritt Scholarship Foundation Wednesday for their participation in the community, club activities and work inside the classroom. Adam Brang, Dan Shefferly, Richard Paddock, Devin Call, Kyland Fitzpatrick and Jeff Franco all received scholarships and the majority of them helped reroof the Boy’s Home on University Boulevard recently. The Arnold Tritt Scholarship Foundation received a boost after NEFBA’s annual gala which raised $20,000 for the foundation and $25,000 for NEFBA’s Charitable Foundation.
• The 20th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast is set for Jan. 19 at 7:30 a.m. at the Osborn Center. The event started in 1988 and now draws over 2,000 people annually.
• Rick Curran, director of media relations and executive communications at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, has joined the Children’s Home Society of Florida’s Buckner Division Board of Directors. He was recognized as one of PR Week magazine’s top 50 health care public relations professionals in 2000 and also served on the board for Northeast Florida’s American Heart Association. Children’s Home Society provides programs and services including adoption, foster care and child abuse prevention.
• AM-930 will celebrate its 15th year as a sports talk radio station Dec. 9 with a bash at the Orange Park Kennel Club. Hosts David Lamm, Joe Cowart, Pete Prisco and others will be on hand.
