Wednesday’s Fraternal Order of Police luncheon at their headquarters on Beach Boulevard provided candidates for office the opportunity to make a last minute appearance before the Nov. 7 general election. FOP luncheons usually attract a crown of about 200-300, but according to FOP President Nelson Cuba, Wednesday’s meeting was one of the largest he’s seen.
“We’ve had 300-plus people out here today, probably because of election season. But it always varies,” said Cuba.
Police officers, judges, elected officials, businessmen and women and friends of the FOP attended the bimonthly event.
“It’s always a great opportunity to get to meet people and let them know what you’re about,” said County Court candidate Virginia Norton. “The FOP provides a great forum for that.
Norton’s campaign efforts were in full swing along with those of numerous others.
Though the luncheons provide a forum for candidates seeking votes, Cuba says they are more about socializing and and less about politics.
“That’s why we put this together,” said Cuba, “to kind of keep people in touch and let them see each other in more of a social atmosphere.
“It’s a good chance to see old friends that they haven’t seen in a while. The fact that this happens only six times a year makes it even a little more special.”
Cuba said the luncheons are also great opportunities not only for the elected officials, but also for the FOP.
“I think this event helps because it allows me the opportunity to get the message out to these elected officials and individuals in the community about what the FOP does,” said Cuba. “We’re here not only to service the community, but to also inform them on what’s going on where they live and about how they can come to us for help.”
