Since 1885, 21 members of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department have died in the line of duty. Friday morning at Fire Station No. 1 on Liberty Street they were honored with prayers, the placing of wreaths and a 21-gun salute. As each name was read, Assistant Chief Randy White tolled the bell that was in Jacksonville’s first City Hall and gave the alarm for the Great Fire of 1901.

Mayor John Peyton proclaimed Oct. 13 “Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day” and helped place three wreaths at the memorial site.

JFRD Public Information Officer Tom Francis said the ceremony coincided with similar observances held across the country during Fire Prevention Week.

“It’s a way to demonstrate to the families of the fallen firefighters that their ultimate sacrifice has not been forgotten and is not taken for granted. We are also making sure that the 21 names of the firefighters inscribed here on this plaque are being kept alive in our memories by mentioning them today and ringing the bell,” said Francis.
