• Florida Bar President and Bedell Dittmar DeVault Pillans & Coxe partner Hank Coxe has appointed Hugh Cotney of the Law Office of Hugh Cotney to the Florida Bar Committee on Judicial Independence.

• Jacksonville-based EverBank’s online-only interest-bearing checking account has been recognized by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine as the best checking account in America in the November issue.

• The guest speaker at the next Downtown Council of the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting Nov. 3 will be State Attorney Harry Shorstein.

• Attorney Jake Schickel was at the University of Florida when Dr. J. Robert Cade was in the process of inventing Gatorade. You’d think Schickel, who ran track for the Gators, as an athlete reaped the benefits. Not always. “Some days he made a bad batch,” said Schickel.

• The Jacksonville Public Library system will hold community forums to get public input in early November. Citizens will look at a progress report from a recent library summit and fill out a Web survey. The forums are at Regency Square Branch Nov. 6 from 6:30-8 p.m., Highlands Branch Nov. 7 from 6:30-8 p.m. and Main Library conference center Nov. 8 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

• Jacksonville Area Legal Aid is holding its “10-4: Injustice Over and Out” fundraising phone-a-thon Tuesday and Wednesday and they are seeking volunteers. Each volunteer will call 25 area attorneys and encourage them to either donate to JALA or make a pro bono contribution. The phone-a-thon will take place in JALA’s boardroom and everyone who contributes in any fashion is invited to JALA’s Equal Justice event at The River Club Nov. 16.
