“When we first moved in, it was like medieval times. After a couple of days, we had moved all the way up to the early ‘90s and two weeks ago, we joined this millennium.”

That’s how Jeff Davis, owner of Legal Art Works, described the process of relocating his demonstrative evidence business into its new home. The old building across from Independent Square on West Bay Street has a lot of character, but things like high-speed Internet and modern telephones were years away when it was constructed.

While it’s not yet fully outfitted, the fourth and latest incarnation of Legal Art Works is open for business. There’s a conference room waiting for a table and his famous barbecue grill is sitting in a corner of the open-air atrium in the building waiting for its first lunchtime fire-up at the new digs.

Legal Art Works was located in an 800 square-foot storefront on Laura Street prior to the move. Davis and his staff now occupy 3,300 square feet of space on two floors.

“We used to share a bathroom with everyone else at the Elks Building, but now we have four bathrooms. We had one door at the old office and I’m not sure yet how many we have here,” he said.

Davis also said it has been quite an adjustment, but he’s used to it. He started the business in the garage at his parents’ house, then moved it into his studio loft at 11 E. Forsyth. Gaining a staff led him to lease the space on Laura Street and the steady growth of the business required the latest relocation.

His signature barbecue grill is taking a little time off during the move, but Davis said he’s planning an office-warming celebration of monumental proportions.

“In about a month, we’re going to throw a party. I hope to have 500 people here. I’m calling all over the state to book a Mariachi band and you bet we’ll have the grill going.”
