• All public libraries are closed Thursday. The City is holding a staff development day.
• Attorneys Sean Cronin and Gregory Maxwell have formed the law office of Cronin & Maxwell and will practice in the areas of medical malpractice, military medical malpractice, aviation accidents, serious personal injury and wrongful death litigation. The firm is on Oak Street in Riverside.
• Clarification to Wednesday’s story about the Florida Supreme Court’s paralegal rule argument. Part of the story should have said The Florida Registered Paralegal rule is a proposal for establishing a two-tier system for paralegals that the Florida Supreme Court heard arguments about on Monday. The story incorrectly stated the Unlicensed Practice of Law Program of The Florida Bar was the proposal before the Supreme Court . The UPL program is a well established program of the Bar whose mission is to protect the public against harm caused by unlicensed individuals practicing law in Florida.
• Peek, Cobb & Edwards founding partner James Cobb was appointed the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Governors for 2007. It’s his second two-year term.
• VyStar is opening its new branch in the Ed Ball Building May 7. The small branch inside the 121 West. Adams building will close.
• The Gator Bowl Association has sent out invites to various elected officials and business leaders to join them at The Players Championship next month. The GBA has secured the use of a chalet on the famed par 3 17th hole during the Friday-Sunday rounds.
• The University of North Florida’s Coggin College of Business is holding its 10th annual Prime F. Osborn III Distinguished Business Leader Awards Luncheon May 23 at the Hyatt. This year’s honorees are CSX Chairman Michael Ward, Haskell President and CEO Steve Halverson, Catherine Reynolds (distinguished alumna) and Dr. B. Jay Coleman (distinguished professor). Past recipients include Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver, LandMar President and CEO Ed Burr, former BellSouth executive Jim McCollum, W.W. Gay and others.
• In a story last Monday, the Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association annual judicial reception should have been listed as being June 7 at the Hyatt not June 19.
