Florida Coastal School of Law will graduate 70 students when the fall semester ends this week, and for the first time those students will receive their diplomas at the Hyatt hotel downtown. The graduation ceremony is set for 3 p.m. Saturday in the Hyatt’s Grand Ballroom.
Brooks Terry, Florida Coastal’s director of marketing and communications, said the school decided to have the ceremony at the Hyatt to give the event more of an intimate feel. Florida Coastal had previously held both its spring and fall graduation ceremonies at the University of North Florida’s Arena.
Terry added that the Arena was too large for the amount of students that graduate after the fall semester. About 65 students graduated in the fall of 2006. Terry said about 315 will graduate in May 2008, and graduation will be at UNF’s Arena.
Among the 69 students receiving their Juris Doctorate degree on Saturday, 24 states are being represented with students coming from as far as Washington and Maine.
The Keynote Speaker is local attorney and former Florida Bar President Hank Coxe. The students voted for Elissa Saavedra as their class speaker.
Sixteen students achieved pro bono recognition by serving 125 hours or more of pro bono service to the community while they were in Jacksonville. Three others achieved 75 or more hours of pro bono service.
