• The Museum of Science and History is celebrating the 38th anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon. The event, “Day of Total Luna-See” is from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 21 at MOSH. There will be numerous activities and weather permitting, guests will have a chance to look at the solar system through one of MOSH’s telescopes.
• Community College Week, a national publication that specializes in issues related to the nation’s community colleges, has ranked Florida Community College at Jacksonville as America’s third-largest producer of associate degrees in nursing. FCCJ graduated 325 nursing students in the 2005-06 academic year, 20 percent more than the previous year’s total of 270. FCCJ also ranked in the top-10 in three other categories: fifth in associate degrees earned by non-minorities, seventh for number of associate degrees in all disciplines and seventh in associate degrees in health professions and related clinical services.
• The Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra (JSYO) will hold auditions for the 2007-08 season Aug. 16 at the FCCJ South campus. Musicians between the ages of 7 and 22 are invited to try out for a spot in six ensemble levels. The JSYO is beginning its 15th season and enrolls more than 200 young artists each year. • More music: The First Coast Community Music School (FCCMS) in partnership with the JSYO will hold “Jump Start Strings Music Camp” July 23-Aug. 3 at the FCCJ South campus. The camp offers beginner violin, viola, cello and bass instruction and no former experience is required. FCCMS is also holding a Beginning Band Camp for ages 9-14 July 23-Aug. 3 and a Band & Orchestra Camp (previous experience required) for ages 10-13 July -20. • The Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville will present the film “When Fried Eggs Fly” starring Bruce Mack July 11 at 7 p.m. and July 13 at 1 p.m. at 333 N. Laura St. Mack will be available to answer questions from the audience at the July 11 screening and will offer a special improvised performance on July 13. The 65-minute film highlights the impact of arts education and documents the experiences of 162 eight-year-olds in a New York City public school who composed, performed and recorded original music with their parents. • Greg Broner has been named the Northeast Florida and Coastal Georgia market executive for U.S. Trust Bank, Bank of America Wealth Management. The new business, which Broner will oversee, was created from the combination of U.S. Trust and Bank of America. Bank of America recently acquired U.S. Trust.
