• Mold problems are plaguing one of the area’s best-known high-rise condos. Beau Rivage, the venerable building on the river in Avondale which houses many of the area’s leading citizens (including former Mayor Ed Austin), will be evacuated for two weeks for a clean-up.
• The Jacksonville Zoo and Garden’s new Garden Plaza is now scheduled to open Labor Day. They had hoped for an April debut but construction problems caused the delay. It’s projected as a prime spot for weddings and other events.
• Joel McEachin of the city’s Historic Preservation Department has to make do with a low-tech slide projector for his presentations. “It’s appropriate that a historic organization has historic equipment,” he said.
• Good try, but no Gator football this spring for two of our biggest civic clubs. The Rotary Club of Jacksonville and the Meninaks tried to get UF Coach Urban Meyer for a joint meeting but he couldn’t make it.
• More Rotary: the growth along the Southbank has the organization’s district leaders considering a new club for that area.
• Back in town. Former WOKV and Lex & Terry Show newscaster Kim McCafferty. She spent the past couple of years in Dallas with the Lex & Terry Show, but is back in Jacksonville. You might not recognize her, though. Her short blond hair is now mid-length brunette.
• What happened to the Jaguars ice cream truck — the one that visited schools and malls to promote the team with free ice cream? They ran the thing into the ground and it couldn’t be repaired, and the remaining cups of Jag Crunch ice cream are being handed out by the Special Events staff at other outings.
• Shands Jacksonville executive Penny Thompson is up for appointment to the Jacksonville Waterways Commission. She’ll replace either Carter Bryan or Bronson Lamb, both of whom have served since the Commission was created in 1984 and whose terms expired March 10 of this year.
• St. Joe Chairman, President and CEO Peter Rummell is hosting a fundraiser for State Rep. Dist. 19 candidate Mike Weinstein Monday at his River Road house. Weinstein’s honorary chairs of his campaign include: Paul Avery, president of Outback Steakhouse; Howard Jenkins, chairman of Publix Supermarkets; Mike Maroone, president of Auto Nation; and Mike Ward, president of CSX.
• Monday, U.S. Rep. John Mica along with members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will tour areas of Ponte Vedra damaged by recent high tides and winds. He’ll be in the area from 11 a.m.-noon.
• A couple of local entrepreneurs are featured in a state publication. Mary O’Donnell’s Inside Golf in San Marco is in Florida Trend magazine while architect Tri Vu and his firm are featured in the Florida Trend supplement, Florida Small Business.
