The Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women is seeking outstanding women to honor at the 22nd anniversary of the Women’s History Month Breakfast. The breakfast is March 4, 2008, in the University of North Florida’s University Center. The commission is accepting nominations of women who have made lasting contributions to the Jacksonville community. Three nominees will be recognized at the event and featured on a commemorative poster.
Criteria for Women’s History Month poster nominees includes:
• Should have made contributions of lasting value to the community
• Must reside in Jacksonville or an adjacent county
• Should serve as an exemplary role model for young women and others
• Should have had life experiences and/or occupations that have been varied and meaningful
For the third year, the commission also will recognize Jacksonville’s leaders of tomorrow during the breakfast.
The “Young Women of Vision” nominees will be selected based on the following criteria:
• Residency in Jacksonville or adjacent county
• Between 18 and 25 years of age
• Varying life experiences, occupations, etc.
• Nominees will have exhibited courage in the face of adversity, overcome great barriers to achieve success, or demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to helping others in the community or making Jacksonville a better place.
• Volunteer activities must be above and beyond the requirements of class projects or school policies.
Nomination forms for both categories are on the commission’s Web site at www.coj.net (keyword search: women). They may also be obtained by calling the Women’s Commission at 630-3410. Only nominations submitted on the approved forms will be accepted. The commission is accepting nominations from individuals, women’s organizations, schools and other groups. The nomination deadline for both is Dec. 14.
The purpose of the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women is to develop a public consciousness of the talents of women, regardless of race, color or creed, as equal partners in the private, business and civic community; to encourage women to become actively involved in matters pertaining to the community; to work toward utilization of capable women in roles of leadership; and to serve as a source of information for women on legal and human rights, economic equality, health and discrimination.
