• The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has gotten a grant from the state worth just under $180,000 for a project called “beach analyst.” The project will be a joint information initiative between JSO and the police departments of Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Jacksonville Beach. The public safety analyst will split their time between JSO and the three beaches law enforcement agencies.

• The Board of Directors of Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, Inc. is hosting its invitation-only 9th annual “Equal Justice” Awards Reception honoring Robert Beckham, Esquire of Holland & Knight. The Honorable Alex Sink, chief financial officer for the state of Florida is speaking at the event on Oct. 19.

• The St. Johns Town Center is offering live music to their shoppers during the fall season. Entertainment will be provided every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings in October in the Park Creen in front of Maggiano’s Little Italy. Some of the performers include Fusion, Feel the Love, Lemond and Teddy Washington & The Point After.

• Another dining option for air travelers with layovers: Chili’s Too is now open at Jacksonville International Airport. The 120-seat restaurant is in the secure area of the new terminal and will be open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Described as a “modified version” of the traditional Chili’s operation, the menu includes fajitas, burgers and a full bar. It is expected to serve between 200 and 300 passengers daily.

• Three additional Duval County Tax Collector locations are now offering limited drivers license transactions to the public. Gateway, North Jacksonville and Neptune Beach branches have joined the suburban offices at Kernan, Mandarin and Cedar Hills already offering the additional services. Transactions are limited to renewals, out of state transfers, name changes, address changes, replacements, reinstatements and State ID cards (new and replacements). A $5.25 service fee is added to each transaction. Tax Collector Mike Hogan said he hopes to expand the service to all branches including Downtown by July 2008.

• New Players Championship Executive Director Ron Cross is reaching out to the local business community to offer benefactor packages for next year’s tournament. Renewals are $13,000 before Oct. 31 and $15,000 after that and the packages include everything from 30 tickets a day to parking to public recognition. The City got its letter from Cross, but the budget crunch may force the City to pass.
