Describing her as “a tough prosecutor” and “a person who truly cares about the victims of crime,” the sheriffs from the Fourth Judicial Circuit endorsed Angela Corey in her bid to succeed State Attorney Harry Shorstein.

Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford, Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler, Corey and Nassau County Sheriff Tommy Seagraves announced their endorsement Wednesday at the Landing.

“To turn around the increased violence in our community, we must have a visible presence, a massive community response and an aggressive prosecutor’s office,” said Rutherford. “Angela Corey will give us that.”

Corey said she was honored by the endorsement.

Chief Assistant State Attorney Jay Plotkin said he’s disappointed the race has taken political undertones and stands by his record in the office.

“I am a little disappointed about politicizing the office,” said Plotkin in a release. “The State Attorney’s Office is not and should not be about politics. The State Attorney’s Office is about keeping our community safe and punishing criminals. I am not a politician, I am a prosecutor.

“As the campaign progresses I am confident that voters will see that I have not only the courtroom experience, but the management and leadership experience needed to be the next State Attorney.”
