• Ever thought about registering a Web address in China? The recent Asian contracts with the Jacksonville Port Authority will likely bring new economic players to town, and businesses that want to communicate via the Web can get a leg up with a Webinar (Internet-based seminar) hosted by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Webinar will help educate small- and medium-sized U.S. exporters on the value of China domain names, how to get one and how to avoid trouble. The Webinar is scheduled for Jan. 22 from 10-11 a.m. Cost is $35 and registration is available at http://www.buyusa.gov/midwest/204.html. For questions, e-mail [email protected]

• The Jacksonville Recreation and Community Services Department is inviting families to Clanzel T. Brown Community Center at 4575 Moncrief Rd. for the next installment of the City’s “Movies in the Park” series. Friday night’s movie will be “Shrek 2.” The projector will roll at 6:30 p.m. and admission is free. For more information, visit www.jaxparks.com.

• Don’t be too surprised if someone asks you to pack up and move to Downtown Jacksonville. The Metropolitan Lofts apartments on Church Street are offering $500 off current residents’ rent if they can convince someone else to move in. At last count, about 10 of the 116 New York-style lofts were available for lease.

• Looking for a parking bargain? Rates have changed at some of the Downtown garages and at the Landing’s lot. The Sports Complex Garage adjacent to Veterans Memorial Arena charges 50 cents for all day and the trolleys arrive every 20 minutes to take commuters into Downtown. The Downtown Garage between Pearl and Clay streets charges $1 per hour with the first hour free and a maximum daily charge of $5. The lot at the Landing now costs $1 per hour with a maximum charge of $10 or $5 if you arrive after 5 p.m. or on weekends.

• The guest speaker for this year’s breakfast to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. is Hattie Hill, CEO of Hattie Hill Enterprises and a best-selling author on the topic of diversity, women’s issues, global leadership and customer service. The breakfast is scheduled for 7-9:30 a.m. Friday at the Prime Osborn Convention Center and is hosted by the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Jacksonville Urban League, the Jacksonville branch of the NAACP and the City of Jacksonville.

• Speaking of Martin Luther King Day, which is on Jan. 21, the Museum of Science and History is paying special tribute to the civil rights leader from 10 a.m.-noon that day. Elementary school-aged children can participate in creating a dream quilt and develop a timeline of King’s life. For more information, call 396-7062.

“One cannot divine nor forecast the conditions that will make happiness. One only stumbles upon them by chance, in a lucky hour, at the world’s end somewhere, and hold fast to the days, as to fortune or fame.”
– Willa Cather, U.S. novelist.
