The Jacksonville Transportation Authority’s bus system could be seeing changes in the near future. Among those is the AirJTA fleet which serves as shuttle between Downtown and JIA.

“(AirJTA is) doing very well,” said Mike Miller, director of external affairs for JTA. “We’re restructuring the system based off of suggestions that the public has made.”

In the midst of this restructuring, AirJTA’s two-bus fleet will also be seeing some changes including the addition of 24 other trolleys and buses combined. Set to begin in August, the system-wide reconstruction of JTA will include reduced fares, less of a wait between AirJTA buses and weekend service to the airport.

“The current time between buses (for AirJTA) is every 90 minutes,” said Miller. “We’re looking to make that every 50 minutes.”

Currently, a one-way ticket for an adult on AirJTA is $3. However, after the proposed changes take place, the fee will be sliced in half.

“We took comments that the public made about the buses and tried to make it better,” said Miller. “And we’re going to run it by everyone again.”

Public hearings have been scheduled to discuss the proposed changes at AirJTA. The first meeting was Tuesday at Fenigan Elementary School in Atlantic Beach. Today, the meeting is at Gateway Town Center Mall, and Monday the meeting will be at Lake Lucina Elementary School. All meetings begin at 5 p.m. with a presentation on the bus changes following at 6 p.m.
