Lawyer applicants are being sought to fill three vacancies on the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. The Board of Governors will be selecting nine nominees for three lawyer vacancies at its May 30 meeting. The nominations will then be forwarded to the Supreme Court to fill two five-year terms commencing Nov. 1, 2008, and one remainder of a five-year term commencing Aug. 1, 2008 and expiring on Oct. 31, 2011.

Attorney members must have been members of The Florida Bar for at least five years. They must be practicing lawyers with scholarly attainments and have an affirmative interest in legal education and requirements for admission to the Bar. Appointment or election to the bench at any level of the court system will disqualify any applicant. Law professors or trustees are ineligible.

Board members of the Bar Examiners must be able to attend approximately ten meetings a year in various Florida locations. Members volunteer 300 or more hours per year on Board business depending on committee assignments. Actual travel expenses connected with the meetings and examinations are reimbursed.

The Florida Bar is also seeking five lawyers to serve four-year terms on the 23-member Supreme Court’s Commission on Professionalism commencing July 1, 2008. The commission acts as a steering and long-range planning commission for the creation and implementation of programs promoting the ideals and goals of professionalism. The group also oversees the development of judicial professionalism programs and the teaching of professionalism in law schools. In addition, it establishes the policies of the Bar’s Center for Professionalism and acts as the Center’s governing board.

Persons interested in applying for these vacancies may download the application for special appointment from the Bar’s Web site, www.floridabar.org, or contact The Florida Bar at (850) 561-5600, ext. 5757. Applications must be submitted to the Executive Director, The Florida Bar, 651 E. Jefferson St., Tallahassee, FL 32399-2300 and received no later than the close of business April 11. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of the required application. The Board of Governors will review all applications and may request telephone or personal interviews.
