Interior Design trends are always changing. But what are homeowners looking for in their new home?

“Whether they are purchasing a new home or remodeling an existing one, new homeowners, including first-time, move-up and custom home buyers, generally purchase new furnishing and décor for their homes,” said Sisler Johnston, president of Sisler Johnston Interior Design.

Johnston cites the latest findings from “Home Accents Today,” which recently published an industry report examining the decorating styles new homeowners prefer, the items they plan to purchase and how much money they intend to spend.

The survey covered a wide range of homeowners and found that:

• 25 percent having a median age of 25 and falling into the Generation Y category.

• 20 percent range in age from 32 to 42 and belong to Generation X.

• More than one-third of those surveyed are Baby Boomers, ages 43 to 61.

When asked to define their tastes, the majority of homeowners described their decorating style as “casual.” Younger homeowners also expressed this style as “trendy and modern,” while older homeowners stated their preferences as “classic” and “traditional.”

New homeowners get design ideas from:

• Internet

• Magazines

• Home decorating TV programs

• Friends

The items that top new homeowners’ shopping lists include:

• Furniture

• Lighting

• Area rugs

• Accent tables and chests

• Decorative pillows

• Wall décor

“As a result of increased environmental awareness, many homeowners are choosing wood, resilient or tile flooring for the home instead of traditional carpeting,” said Johnston. “The trend in area rugs is related to the shift in flooring choices. Area rugs also help homeowners define furniture groupings and add an interesting design element to their décor.”

Johnston explains that it is very important to listen to new home buyers and find out what their style is.

“When our residential designers work with new home buyers, we listen to their concerns, help them define their preferences and choose furnishings that will be enjoyed in the home for many years to come,” she said.
