The Jacksonville Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates(ABOTA) awarded its first “Civility Award” to Jacksonville attorney Hugh Cotney Wednesday at its annual judicial luncheon.
The luncheon is held to give attorneys and judges a chance to discuss what is expected to maintain courtroom decorum, but it was also a time to recognize some of its attendees.
Chapter President Charlie Sorenson found out about the Civility Award when he attended the organization’s national meeting before taking office in December, 2007.
“The Civility Award is an award that other chapters nationally have given,” said Sorenson. “It symbolizes what our organization stands for.”
The inscription on the trophy states: ”Member who has done most in the past year to elevate the standards of integrity, honor and courtesy in the Jacksonville legal community.”
Organizers of the luncheon were able to keep the presentation a secret from its treasurer, but even after he received the award he was surprised he was recognized.
“It’s an honor to be a member of ABOTA and to receive the first Civility Award,” said Cotney. “As I looked around the room I thought of ever other member of this organization deserving of this award because they live up to the standards of professionalism and integrity of this organization.”
