Justice Coalition Executive Director Ann Dugger remembers a lot of things that happened the day Ted Hires, founder of the organization, was found dead at his home last December. One thing in particular stands out and has led to a way to honor Hires’ work for victims of crime and the community.

“I remember standing there with Mayor John Peyton and he was talking about what a positive influence Ted had on Jacksonville,” said Dugger. “Then he said that we had to carry on Ted’s legacy.”

Within a month, a committee including Peyton, Sheriff John Rutherford, State Attorney Angela Corey and a group of about 20 business and civic leaders began planning a way to honor Hires and recognize those who continue his work.

Nominees are being sought for awards in three categories: The Outstanding Civilian Award, Business Award and Government Agency Award.

The Citizen Award recognizes a victim of violent crime who has exhibited exceptional perseverance or determination or a person who acted bravely either to aid a victim or to prevent another person from becoming a victim. The Business Award recognizes a local business owner, corporation or organization outside the victim assistance field for service or contributions to victims of violent crime. The Government Agency Award honors a government agency or organization for its service to victims of violent crime.

The categories and criteria were chosen because, “Ted was about being a voice for the people and a voice for victims and a voice for fighting crime in our community,” said Dugger.

She also said the dinner will be unlike any hosted before by the Justice Coalition. On the menu will be barbecued chicken with all the trimmings, one of Hires’ favorite meals, and it will be served home-style. Tickets are $25 per person.

The inaugural Ted Hires Legacy Awards is Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. at North Jacksonville Baptist Church on North Main Street. For tickets or more information about the awards and sponsorships or nomination forms call 783-6312, visit www.tedhireslegacy.com or pick up a copy of the “Victim’s Advocate,” the Justice Coalition’s monthly newspaper. Deadline for award nominations is Sept. 10.
