• A couple of former City Council presidents have taken on new Council standing committee roles. Michael Corrigan is now a member of the Public Health & Safety committee while Ronnie Fussell is now a member of the Recreation & Community Development committee. Both appointments were effective Aug. 17.

• Speaking of Council, member Reggie Brown has asked to be excused from all business Sept. 14-18. He’s an Army Reservist and has mandatory military training.

• One more from Council. Members Clay Yarborough and Bill Bishop are holding a public meeting Sept. 3 to talk about the proposed budget. It’s at 6:30 p.m. in the Police Athletic League cafeteria at Ed Austin Park in Arlington. The park is on the site of the old Dunes Golf Course. Mayor John Peyton is supposed to attend, as well.

• The Public Defender’s Office has plenty of Kalil news. Michelle Kalil Taylor is the newest member of the office’s Homicide Division. She started in the Public Defender’s Office in 1998. Michael Kalil has also been hired by the Public Defender’s Office and was sworn into federal court Thursday.

• The annual Rock’n Ride for daniel kids is Saturday and starts at The Landing. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. and the ride leaves at 10:30. The after party is at Mavericks. To register or for more information go to www.danielkids.org. Proceeds support programs daniel provides for over 1,000 neglected and abused children.

• Edward Waters College President Claudette Williams is the speaker at next month’s meeting of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The meeting is Sept. 9 at San Jose Country Club and starts at 11:30 a.m. It’s $25 for members and $35 for non-members. For more, information call Jimmy Kelly at 296-1055, ext. 1026.

• Expect former School Board Chair Martha Barrett to qualify to run for School Board Dist. 1 again sometime today, likely this morning. Barrett has also picked up the endorsements of Ken Manuel and Cathie Pittman Shimp, who both ran last year for the seat she had to vacate due to term limits. The election is Sept. 15.

• GrayRobinson filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court Thursday on behalf of the Coalition for Property Rights and its lead local attorney Manny Papalas, but it’s newsworthy on another front. It’s expected to be the first property rights case heard by recently confirmed Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
