• If you commute using Atlantic Boulevard and live east of Kernan Boulevard, you got a nice surprise Monday morning. The two westbound lanes of the new overpass were open. The overpass — which will see Atlantic go above Kernan — isn’t done, but two lanes are now open.

• College football games are not the only events where underage drinking occurs at tailgating parties. Thursday, Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco agents patrolled the Jaguars vs. Indianapolis Colts game at Municipal Stadium and arrested 41 people for underage possession of alcohol including three people under the age of 18.

• The First Coast Trails Coalition, a group of local planners, architects and development professionals, has been pursuing the creation of recreational trails in North Florida for several years. Their latest initiative is an application for a $50 million federal grant to fund more trails in the region. The group is hosting a meeting open to all those interested in the subject Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Main Library Downtown. Mayor John Peyton will introduce an agenda of topics concerning future plans for trail development. Jim Sayer, executive director of the Adventure Cycling Association, will also make a presentation. For details call 630-3570.

• Also, Peyton and Chief Community Officer Roslyn Phillips have issued a call to all Jacksonville residents to look for opportunities to volunteer on the Jan. 18 annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Peyton signed on as an inaugural member of the Cities of Service coalition earlier this year and Phillips is managing the initiative. Peyton and Phillips will volunteer with three agencies during the week of Jan. 18: a childcare center supported by the Jacksonville Children’s Commission and Early Learning Coalition’s Guiding Stars program, Meals on Wheels and the Clara White Mission.

• Five Guys Burgers and Fries on Third Street in Jacksonville Beach is now open until 3 a.m. Thursday-Saturday. They normally close at 10 p.m.

• Speaking of Jacksonville Beach, the Dick’s Wings has closed. The Mayport Road location is still open, however. Just down the road and off Marsh Landing Parkway in the Target/Publix shopping center, Karlene’s Deli & Bakery has also closed.
