• Clarification to a notice in Monday’s City Notes. The Jacksonville Bar Association’s Diversity Symposium at Florida Coastal School of Law is Friday.
• Circuit City at Regency was full of President’s Day shoppers who were looking to grab some items at blowout prices of up to 50 percent off. By noon, there was nary a parking space to be had and people were consistently heading in the electronics store, one of several in Jacksonville going out of business.
• The Northeast Florida Equestrian Society has opted to cancel its fundraiser set for May 29-31 at the Equestrian Center. According to NFES Chair Betty Griner, the expenses associated with the event made it cost prohibitive.
• Klaidman Realty Group has opened an office on the first floor of the Bank of America tower next to the gift shop. The residential real estate company has four offices in the state.
• A cheap option for lunch can be found at the Florida Coastal School of Law Chili Cook Off today from noon-1 p.m. For a small fee, cost was $3 at last year’s second annual event, people will be able to sample about 20 different types of chili and proceeds will go to the charity of choice of the organization with the most popular chili.
• Here’s proof that chivalry can come early in life. Children from the audience played a game of musical chairs during half time of the Jacksonville University men’s basketball game at the Arena Monday. Participants had to run down, make a lay up and run back to an empty chair at half court. The last two contestants were a boy and a girl. The older boy ran down, made his basket and dribbled back to what was going to be an easy victory. But he stopped just short of the chair, waited for the girl to make her basket and let her take the chair and the prize.
• The Springfield Women’s Club will host its Mardi Gras Ball 2009 from 7-11 p.m. Saturday. Tickets can be purchased at www.sacarc.org and proceeds will benefit Springfield Animal Care and Rescue Club.
• The 14th Annual Northeast Florida Scottish Games and Festival is Feb. 28 at the Clay County Fairgrounds in Green Cove Springs. The games begin at 9 a.m. Tickets are $10 per person, all the details are at www.neflgames.com.
• Two local artists will hold painting workshops at the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens. Christina Foard will conduct a one-day workshop Feb. 28 to study abstract painting in the style of Georgia O’Keeffe. March 7, Hillary Hogue will conduct a class in the gardens. Both workshops are from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and each costs $70 for museum members, $90 for non-members and $55 for active docents. To register call 355-0630.
• Jacksonville artist Jim Draper is showcasing his latest work, “New Visions,” at the Cultural Center of Ponte Vedra Beach. The exhibit opens Feb. 27 with a reception at 6:30 p.m. and will continue through April 11. Call 280-0614 for more information.
• Update on the San Marco Food Court. The Oral Explosions Eateries venture on the corner of San Marco Boulevard and Children’s Way is expected to open by April and, according to owner Manish Bansai, feature plenty of the following: a New York style pizzeria with Italian dishes; a coffee roaster with breakfast sandwiches; an Asian bistro with gourmet wok and sushi; and a fresh gourmet deli. Additionally, Bansai said there would be one more surprise for the venture he can’t yet reveal.
• The big red bus will be making its way around Jacksonville and the beaches starting Friday. The third annual “Double Decker Bus Pub Crawl” starts and finishes at Seven Bridges Restaurant in Tinseltown while making stops Downtown, the Beach and St. Augustine, with different tours nightly on Friday, Saturday, Feb. 26, 27 and 28.
