As the the 2009 legislative session began, the 11-member Duval Delegation headed to Tallahassee with plenty on their plate. They will take up everything from education funding to alternative energy. Today, the Daily Record continues with a series of question and answer sessions with members of the Delegation, all of whom were sent the same eight questions. Today, we continue with Dist. 18 Rep. Ronald “Doc” Renuart.

What district do you represent and what area of Northeast Florida is that?
I represent House Dist. 18, which covers Duval and St. Johns counties from Mayport south to Vilano Beach, west from St. Johns Bluff and Southside Boulevard/Baymeadows area, and south along U.S. Highway 1.

What are the two biggest issues facing Northeast Florida this session and why?
The current economic downturn affects us all. People fear losing their jobs and income. Property insurance is still a burning issue.

What is the biggest issue facing you and your constituents?
I like to hear from my constituents about issues that impact their daily lives. In that regard, there are several items that are of concern to me aside from the economy and property insurance. Healthcare and school funding are very important issues that will have to be addressed by the Legislature. In addition, I am concerned that excessive government regulation is holding back the economic growth and recovery in our region.

Given the state’s economic situation, are you optimistic or pessimistic heading into the session and why?
I have concerns about using the federal economic stimulus funds for recurring expenses within the state budget. We have to be careful not to become too reliant on federal bailout money. Once the stimulus money runs out we are back where we started. We still need to look at ways to increase efficiency in government.

What committee(s) are you on?
• Health Care Appropriations
• Health Care Services Policy
• Military & Local Affairs Policy
• Agriculture & Natural Resources Policy

What is the number one concern you hear from your constituents?
The economy and its adverse impact on local businesses.

What can be done at the state level to help the foreclosure problem in the Jacksonville area?
Keeping the tax burden low, fighting unemployment and attracting new businesses and industry into Florida.

Who are you living with while in session?
I have arranged to stay by myself.
