JBA Sports Vice-Commissioner

For me, the pageantry of The Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament is less of a celebration of the outdoors and more of a signature event evincing the onset of fall. Beyond the fact the grass only has to be cut once a week, fall brings excitement to me because it is the time when toe meets leather and football season kicks off.

My excitement is not always shared though, as I think others in my office are beginning to get a little annoyed at my blind-side tackling of them ala “Terry Tate, Office Linebacker.”

Believe it or not, within the Jacksonville Bar Association, there exist a few actual athletes. We aren’t talking fantasy football team managers, or “Al Bundy-esque” has-beens. No, there are actually a few talented guys and gals who can still get out there and compete without blowing out an ACL. For those athletes, we are proud to announce a new season of JBA sports is set to kick off.

This year’s sports schedule has some new sports, new rules and new locations in an effort to keep things fresh.

For 2009-10, the JBA sports schedule is as follows: Fall Co-ed Kickball, Oct.-Nov., Fishweir Park/Riverside; Special event w/JBA Social Committee., Dec. TBD; 4-on-4 Basketball Jan.-Feb., Riverside YMCA, Spring Co-ed Ultimate Frisbee, Feb.-Apr., Fishweir Park/Riverside; Spring Co-ed Golf, March-May, Rotating at local courses; Spring Flag Football, April-June, TBD; Summer Basketball, June-August, Jacksonville Indoor Sports; Fall Softball Sept.-Nov., TBD; Fall Co-ed Kickball, Sept.-Nov.,TBD.

New Commissioner Rick Britton also intends on scheduling several special sporting events ranging from triathlon relays and volleyball to “bar sports socials” that may include billiards, darts or shuffleboard tournaments. Though Rick is full of bright ideas, he is actively soliciting feedback as to sports and locales where JBA members wish to engage in the competitive bond athletics forge. One of our main initiatives this fall is eliciting participation from a new set of faces, including more female members. “With more than 2,000 Jacksonville Bar Members, the Sports League is dedicated to increasing participation by expanding the traditional sports and therefore providing an opportunity for all members,” said Britton.

For further information about the Jacksonville Bar Association sports or if you wish to get involved, please regularly check back here in the Daily Record, consult the JBA Web site, and/or contact Vice Commissioner Charles Jimerson at [email protected] or Commissioner Rick Britton at [email protected]
