• Jacksonville Human Rights Commission Chair Edward Johnson had made his case for keeping the Commission. In a letter to City Council President Richard Clark — who has suggested that all City boards and commissions need to be examined in-depth — Johnson says the HRC is responsible for helping the City secure $28 million in Community Development Block Grant funds and another $30 million in Equal Employment Opportunity funds, which are overseen by the federal government.
• Forbes magazine recently released its 2009 version of NFL Team Valuations, with the Jaguars — valued at $866 million, according to the magazine — ranking 29th out of the league’s 32 teams. Tops on their list is the Dallas Cowboys at $1.7 billion, with the Oakland Raiders in last at $797 million. In past lists, the Jaguars ranked 28th (2008), 29th (2007) and 26th (2006).
• In honor of Labor Day, Chik-fil-A will offer a free chicken sandwich to anyone wearing sports-related apparel Monday from 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Qualifying togs include any article of clothing with a sports team’s logo from hats to socks and everything in between.
• Lori Parham, Florida state director for AARP, will be the featured speaker at the SaveAndInvest.org education forum at the Jacksonville Marriott Hotel on Salisbury Road Wednesday from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. It’s sponsored by the FINRA Investor Education Forum, AARP and the Florida Office of Financial Reform. The topic of the forum is teaching how to make sound decisions before making investments. Admission is free and no reservations are required.
