• Lawyers are encouraged to make nominations of Jacksonville Bar Association members for the Financial News & Daily Record Lawyer of the Year Award. The Daily Record annually recognizes a lawyer in the community for his or her longstanding dedication to improving the lives of individuals through community service, over and above the practice of law. Submit nominations to James F. Bailey, Daily Record, 10 N. Newnan St., Jacksonville, Fla., 32202, or by e-mail to [email protected]. Nominations are needed by April 15.

• JEA has announced its 2010 board of directors. Ron Townsend will serve as chair. The rest of the board consists of: Ashton Hudson, vice chair, Jim Gilmore, secretary, Mike Hightower, assistant secretary, and Jay Fant, Cynthia Austin and Karen Bowling.

• After a delay, Zodiac Grill opens in its new location on Adams Street today.

• Tech attorneys, take note. As part of its 10th anniversary, Fastcase, the Bar’s free legal research provider, has released a searchable legal research iPhone application. The download is available at www.fastcase.com/iphone.

• Attorney Maggie Jo Hilliard has been selected as a member of the Board of Directors of the Florida Guardian Ad Litem Foundation.

• It’s a long way off, but the 56th Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair is Nov. 3-14.

• At Glen Kernan, a bunch of local junior golfers recently played 100 holes to raise money for the North Florida Junior Golf Foundation. Boots Farley, the organization’s executive director, wanted to raise $30,000. Pledges are still coming in.

• The renovated City Hall Annex building was recently awarded the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification, making it the first Gold Certified building in Downtown and one of only four Gold Certified buildings in the city. The 100-year-old building was renovated by Danis Construction for the Jacksonville Police and Fire Pension Fund and is occupied by the city. KBJ Architects, McVeigh and Mangum Engineering and TLC Engineering were also on the construction team.

• Speaking of the Annex, it was also named the Historic Rehabilitation Project of the Year at the annual NAIOP awards dinner last month.

• The Jacksonville Jazz Festival is set for Memorial Day weekend and Laura Street and the Landing are both integral facets of the event. While the roundabout at the Landing that’s currently under construction won’t quite be done, City officials say the area will be passable, clean and safe for pedestrians.

• The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office received a $20,000 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation to help implement the Jacksonville Safety Belt Enforcement program.
