• Florida State College at Jacksonville President Steven Wallace is up for appointment to the Jacksonville Journey Oversight Committee. He’ll replace FSCJ Downtown Campus President Edythe Abdullah, who resigned from the school to become president of Essex County College in New Jersey.
• Speaking of appointments, Wilfredo Gonzalez, Lonnie Marts, Pamela Payne, Shannon Miller, Rick Wilkins, Matthew Couloute Jr., Carl Cannon, Michael Munz and Ron Salem have all been nominated to serve on the Sports & Entertainment Board. Salem’s appointment will require a waiver of a City rule since he’s being appointed to a fourth and fifth term.
• April is Fair Housing Month and Jacksonville Area Legal Aid is recognizing the occasion. Attorneys with the Fair Housing Unit will take part in a phone bank on Ch. 12/25 during newscasts from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. today. The organization also is partnering with Florida State College at Jacksonville to highlight the month in the Fair Housing Forum April 23. For information, call 356-8371.
• First Coast No More Homeless Pets needs your vote. The organization is trying to secure a Pepsi “Refresh Everything” grant for $25,000 for its Pet Food Bank and Wellness Clinic. The public is allowed to vote for the best ideas submitted to improve the world and the top 10 ideas will receive $25,000. The organization was 12th last month out of 1,000 ideas and is in the running again this month. The organization asks the community to visit and vote at www.refresheverything.com/petfoodbank.
• The Jacksonville Urban League will host the Third Annual Empowerment Summit from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 28 at its offices at 903 W. Union St. The annual event focuses on education, employment and training and economic empowerment. As the National Urban League turns 100 this year, the summit is just one of several activities planned by the Jacksonville Urban League. • Gov. Charlie Crist recently recognized Ponte Vedra Beach resident Janet Koehler as the Governor’s Point of Light for Environmental Awareness Month. She was given the honor for increasing environmental awareness through volunteering with the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Reserve, where she led tours, coordinated field trips and developed educational programs.
