• The League of Women Voters is nearing the century mark. The organization known for its voter education efforts, recently turned 90. • Update on an earlier City Note: Sun Dog Diner and Metro Diner aren’t the only two local restaurants being featured on an upcoming “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” episode. The Food Network show will also feature Culhane’s Irish pub, where crews will be filming today and Wednesday.
• Correction. City Council Finance Chair Stephen Joost and Finance members Clay Yarborough and Bill Bishop voted against Ordinance 2009-758 Monday.
• Local officials and Saft Group executives will celebrate the groundbreaking of the global company’s battery manufacturing plant at Cecil Commerce Center March 15. Saft’s new facility will be a high-volume manufacturing plant building advanced lithium-ion cells and batteries for military hybrid vehicles, aviation and aerospace, smart grid support, broadband back-up power and energy storage for renewable energy. Following receipt of a $95 million grant last year from the U.S. Department of Energy under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Saft selected Jacksonville as the site for its new battery factory. The total cost of the project is $200 million and the plant is expected to bring at least 280 jobs to the Jacksonville area.
• State Rep. Lake Ray will host a Dist. 17 town hall meeting Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Police Athletic League at 3450 Monument Rd. in Arlington. He will address issues from the community he serves regarding the 2010 Legislative session including employment, the budget, insurance, transportation, education and other concerns his constituents may have.
• The 5 Points Theatre is showing “Hausu” at 11 p.m. Friday night. Venue owner Jack Shad said it’s a 1970s-era Japanese horror film and described it as “a live action Scooby Doo on acid.” The theater is also screening this year’s Oscar-nominated short films next week.
