Vacations, lawsuits and public prayer
Most of you are affected by the economy and you’ve been taking action about it. You also have definite opinions about other issues of the day.
Daily Record readers weighed in on 13 Weekly Poll questions the second quarter of 2010. The results, while unscientific, show some overwhelming reactions and other almost split-down-the-middle responses.
Here’s a recap:
• The economy definitely has influenced you. Almost three-quarters of you, 74 percent, have checked your credit score, 71 percent dipped into your personal savings to help pay bills the past year and 67 percent plan a “stay”cation rather than a vacation.
• When it comes to venturing out, just over a third of you, 35 percent, planned to attend The Players Championship May 6-9 at TPC Sawgrass. It was close between the other two options – 31 percent planned to watch it on TV and 34 percent didn’t plan to do either.
• A cruise was a popular way to unwind. Almost two-thirds of you have taken a cruise - 65 percent.
• You’re solidly, 95 percent, in favor of BP containing and cleaning up its Gulf oil spill, although 5 percent say the government should take charge of it. Just slightly over half of you, at 52.6 percent, said in May, after the April 22 BP spill, that drilling should be allowed off the coast of Florida.
• During the legislative session, a majority - 66 percent of you - said teacher pay in public school should not be based on student performance. But when it comes to texting while driving, you resoundingly, at 89 percent, said it should be a ticketable offense.
• A little more than half of you, almost 55 percent, have called fire or rescue services for assistance. Even more of you, 85 percent, have been treated in a hospital emergency room.
• Most of you, almost 80 percent, have not personally sued any person or organization.
• You’re just about evenly split about whether public meetings should open with a prayer, 49.5 percent saying yes and 50.5 percent saying no.
• While the question whether readers agree with the removal of Gen. Stanley McChrystal is answered in the third quarter, the results are available today: 58 percent of you agreed the general should have been relieved of duty.
