Before they could begin to prioritize the goals of the year ahead, members of the Jacksonville Asian American Bar Association had to determine their new leadership heading into the fall.

During its recent meeting, members elected William Li of Pappas Metcalf as president, Maria Aguila of the Law Office of Maria Aguila as vice president and Larry Wang of the Law Office of Larry Wang as treasurer.

“I’m looking forward to a year of accomplishing goals and continuing to grow (the organization),” said Aguila.

The group will finalize those goals at its next meeting Sept. 9, but Aguila said work will continue with the Florida Coastal School of Law’s Asian Pacific American Law Students Association.

Members meet with the students for mentoring sessions and topical seminars and offer real life experiences, said Aguila. The mentoring will resume when students return to classes in the fall.

In addition, Aguila said the group will continue to grow relationships with other smaller bar organizations as well as The Jacksonville Bar on projects such as its annual Diversity Symposium.

The association was established in July 2002.

As always, Aguila said the group will continue to grow with efforts to attract additional members to the group, or as she calls it, family.

“We’ve all known each other for years and we really are like family,” she said. ”It really is going to be a good year.”
