YLS Board of Governors Member Fraz Ahmed

It’s the start of a new year for the Young Lawyers Section and we couldn’t be more excited about the many events we have planned for our close to 700 YLS members.

In the fall, the YLS will once again host the award-winning “Afternoon at the Courthouse” seminar. This free seminar is designed to introduce Jacksonville’s new lawyers and reacquaint seasoned practitioners to the Duval County Courthouse, the local judiciary and courtroom personnel, as well as instruct attendees in courtroom protocol and etiquette.

The seminar is open to all attorneys and law students in Jacksonville, but is specifically geared toward new attorneys who will benefit from a general introduction to Jacksonville’s judicial system.

The seminar will be followed by a reception open to all YLS members and our local judiciary. There will be more details to come in The JBA bulletins and e-mails. To join the “Afternoon at the Courthouse” committee, please contact Lindsay Tygart-Havice at [email protected].

Also in the fall, the YLS begins preparations for its “Holidays in January” project to benefit Family Support Services of Northeast Florida. The YLS and the Northeast Florida Paralegal Association team up to co-host the event in January. The goal is to provide a “Holiday in January” for foster children who may not have received presents without the party. It is geared toward children who are relocated during the holiday season due to unsafe or abusive homes. To join our “Holidays in January” committee, please contact Brad Blair at [email protected].

For those of you who like to meet and mingle with friends and colleagues after a long work day, our Social Chair, Christian George, is diligently planning our social and happy hour calendar for the year ahead. With Christian at the helm, there is no question there will be some very memorable social events throughout the year. To join our Social Committee, please contact Christian George at [email protected].

With fall right around the corner, we are all mentally preparing ourselves for football frenzy and the start of college basketball season. At the same time, several YLS sports leagues are also set to get under way in the near future. Last year was the inaugural year of the YLS Kickball League, which turned out to be a tremendous success. Everyone had a great time, even though our former JBA President, Dan Bean, went down with a devastating season-ending cramp. Win or lose, we are looking forward to continuing our post-game celebration at Mudville Grille.

I would also like to thank last year’s YLS sports commissioners, Rick Britton and Charlie Jimerson, for a successful year of YLS sports. Without their service, our success would not have been possible. We are currently seeking a YLS member to serve as this year’s YLS sports commissioner. If interested, please e-mail me at [email protected].

For more information or questions about any of our upcoming events or ways to get involved, please feel free to contact me or any of our YLS Board Members.
