The Jacksonville Transportation Authority is conducting two public hearings today about several proposed route changes, including possible expansions to the popular Riverside and Beaches trolley services.

The Riverside Trolley is a weekday, midday 1.8-mile trolley line that runs from Downtown to Riverside. The public hearing will focus on proposed expansion to Avondale.

The line currently goes from Downtown to 5 Points, but with expansion, it would continue down Riverside Avenue to King Street, then south on St. Johns Avenue to Herschel Street.

The original Riverside Trolley service costs 50 cents per trip. With the expansion, the price per trip would rise to $1.

An additional option would be to extend the route to include service to FSCJ’s Kent Campus.

“Ever since we started the service, we’ve always gotten questions about expansion into Avondale,” said Mike Miller, JTA director of external affairs. “People really said they wanted a way to get there.”

As for the Beaches Trolley, the expansion is to extend it year-round.

The current Friday-Sunday service operates from the South Beach Parkway Shopping Center to the Atlantic Village Shopping Center. This year, it began May 7 with a $1 fare. JTA proposes to expand the weekend service throughout the year.

Those are just two of the 21 proposed changes to bus routes, shuttles and trolleys to be discussed during the public hearings.

All suggestions and comments will be considered before final service modifications are made. If adopted, the changes would take effect Labor Day, Sept. 6.
