Cecil W. Powell & Company celebrates business, building
Insurance company, building mark anniversaries
Jacksonville-based Cecil W. Powell & Company and more than 100 clients, friends and family members commemorated two anniversaries on Friday.
The company reached its 75th anniversary and the building it occupies, the historic Morocco Temple, reached its 100th year.
The firm’s history shows that Cecil W. Powell graduated from Georgia Tech and moved to Jacksonville to manage a surety bond department of another company. In January 1935, he founded his own company.
In 1973, his son, Fitzhugh Powell Sr., was named president and principal owner. He continues as chairman.
His son, Fitzhugh Powell Jr., was named president in 1993.
The company occupies the renovated Morocco Temple at 219 N. Newnan St. Downtown. The building, which was constructed in 1910, was designed by famed architect Henry John Klutho and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The FKP Ltd. partnership, led by Fitzhugh Powell Sr. and Margaret Powell, bought the property in 1984. It was renovated and Cecil W. Powell & Company moved in during August 1986.
Cecil W. Powell & Company is an insurance, financial planning and surety bonds company. The company said it has grown from one man producing $50,000 in revenue to a 50-person agency with revenues topping $7.5 million.
