• New Heights, formerly Cerebral Palsy of Northeast Florida, has appointed Joe Chimelewski as chief development officer. He previously served as vice president of corporate development and recruitment for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida.
• The Jacksonville Port Authority marked the inaugural ship call Wednesday of the Suez Canal Bridge, part of a new rotation of weekly calls at the Port’s TraPac Container Terminal at Dames Point. The service, jointly operated by TraPac parent company, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. and “K” Line, will expedite cargo movement from major Asian ports to the U.S. East Coast, including Jacksonville, via the Suez Canal.
• Jacksonville University’s School of Nursing is one of 63 schools that will receive funding to award eight scholarships from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. At JU, eight $10,000 scholarships will be awarded to students entering accelerated nursing programs during the 2010-2011 academic year.
• Tropical Smoothie Café will celebrate the Fourth Annual National Flip Flop Day by giving the first 500 customers who visit the restaurant wearing flip-flops on Friday a free 24-ounce Jetty Punch smoothie. Also, there’s a fundraiser through June 27 to benefit Camp Sunshine, a Maine retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses. The 285-unit franchise system wants to raise at least $325,000.
• Another business at the Landing has gotten into the “art” spirit. River Fit is exhibiting the work of local painters for clients to view while they work out on the treadmills and weight machines.
• Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa hired Martin Diehr as general manager of the recently renovated Cabana Beach Club. Diehr has more than 15 years of experience in the hospitality industry.
