• If you were on Bay Street heading past the Courthouse Annex Wednesday and saw the tents and commotion outside, it was part of the 30th anniversary celebration for the Guardian ad Litem for the Fourth Judicial Circuit. The program provides a voice in the courtroom for abused, abandoned and neglected children.

• And if you happened to see a big cat in-line skating down Bay Street toward the stadium, it was Jacksonville Jaguars mascot Jaxson de Ville. He part of the Guardian ad Litem celebration and took the scenic route back to work.

• Gov. Charlie Crist and Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Stephanie Kopelousos will be in the area with other local officials tomorrow to discuss several Northeast Florida transportation projects.

• Crist recently reappointed a Jacksonville woman to the State Board of Cosmetology. Upon Senate confirmation, Myra Jower, a professor of cosmetology at Florida State College at Jacksonville, will be reappointed for a term that began Tuesday and will end Oct. 31, 2013.

• Donna Orender, a Ponte Vedra resident and president of the New York-based Women’s National Basketball Association, told the Women in Business Awards audience Wednesday that one of 27 girls played sports when she was young. Today, it’s one in 2.5. She said 80 percent of women in corporate leadership played sports. “It’s a currency for success,” she said.

• Basketball fans might want to mark two more dates on their calendars. The first round of the 2010 Women’s National Basketball draft starts at 3 p.m. April 8 on ESPN2. The opening game of the 14th season will be 2 p.m. May 15.

• Lawyer Robert Meek, a partner with Foley & Lardner, will talk about receivership next week with the Institute of Management Accountants, the professional association for those who run the internal finances of companies. Receivership might not be well known, but it has big implications. The meeting is 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. March 31 at the Holiday Inn at Baymeadows. The nonmember cost is $17. For information, visit www.jacksonville.imanet.org.
