Workspace: Carol Alexander, Ritz Theatre & La Villa Museum executive director
Carol Alexander wants to share a treasure with the community.
Alexander is executive director of the Ritz Theatre & La Villa Museum, a cultural institution that celebrates LaVilla’s African-American history.
“It’s a treasure that more people need to know about,” said Alexander, who has served as director since the venue re-opened in 1999.
Alexander moved to Jacksonville from Philadelphia with her family in 1982 and became involved with the then-planned project initially as a member of the community. She took the leadership position when it was available and helped to direct the construction and refurbishment. Being a part of the process and its history was a rush, to say the least.
“Besides having my three sons, it’s the most exciting experience I’ve ever had,” she said. “There’s always an adrenaline rush.”
She recalled the venue’s opening date, Sept. 24, 1999, which was attended by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The day was a mad scramble to ensure everything was perfect, and it was, she said.
The venue celebrated its 10th anniversary last year with events such as Super Bowl festivities and continues to celebrate with ongoing events that include monthly spoken word, amateur nights and jazz performances.
“We’ve had a lot of people, a lot of artists and a lot of great programming,” she said. “I’m so very proud of what all we have here.”
The museum is filled with recreated settings and scenes of African-American history and artwork, such as the massive “Each One Teach One” exhibit.
Sustainability has been an issue, especially in a tough economy, but Alexander is seeking board members who share the community’s passion for the cultural institution and who want to be a part of keeping the venue thriving.
“I want to see others who are as concerned and passionate as me,” she said.
