Community Involvement: I have been working with the Family Nurturing Center of Florida since 2007. The Family Nurturing Center is a nonprofit organization that offers a safe environment for children to spend quality time with their parents when it might not be safe for the children to be alone with a parent unsupervised. The Center also provides a safe environment for parents to exchange their children when there has been a history of domestic violence between the parents.
How did you get involved?
I was recruited by a friend, Michael Fox Orr, who is on the board of everything and involved in every community project there is.
How can someone else get involved?
Please give me a call.
What have you learned/achieved through the experience?
I’ve learned through my experience as a family law attorney and through my experience observing visitation/time-sharing at the Family Nurturing Center that a child’s need for his or her parents should not be overshadowed by any person’s perceived need to punish another person. The courts and attorneys need to be cognizant that there are people who make unhealthy decisions at the expense of their children and as a legal community we need to be careful to make sure that children aren’t being used by one parent to punish the other. Even though parents don’t always get along or sometimes parents have problems with dependency, it doesn’t change the fact that children love their parents and need quality time with them. I’m proud to be a part of an organization that helps make that happen.
What was the last book you read or are reading?
“Florida Appellate Practice” by day and “Thomas and the Great Discovery” by Rev. W. Awdry by night. (P.S. “Thomas and the Great Discovery” is not about trial preparation.)
