Based on C.S. Lewis’s classic series of children’s novels, “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Exhibition” has brought the author’s stories and characters to the Museum of Science & History.

Displays use many of the costumes and props used in the popular films as a way to explore the fantasy world of Narnia. The exhibit also includes interactive elements with an educational theme.

“It’s a great mix,” said MOSH Development Manager Kristi Taylor. “People who are interested in the movies can enjoy it and there are also elements of science and history. Like everything we do, there’s something that can appeal to children, parents and grandparents.”

Some of the video presentations that accompany the costumes and props from the films were developed by scientists from the California Institute of Technology and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Global Exhibition Specialists Inc. created the exhibit in partnership with Walt Disney Pictures and it’s on a national tour. Other host cities include Philadelphia, Houston and Kansas City.

Taylor said many of the educational elements of the exhibit complement the museum’s permanent exhibits and MOSH’s summer camps will also take advantage of the theme. One event on the schedule is “Napping in Narnia,” an overnight experience July 31 that’s designed for children and adults.

“It’s a popular activity with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and we have a few nights a year set aside for families. The kids just roll out their sleeping bags, but many of the parents and grandparents bring cots or air mattresses. Everybody enjoys the pizza,” said Taylor.

She also said the summer months are the museum’s busiest. In addition to children being out of school, MOSH hosts several summer camps for pre-K to fifth graders. There’s also the weather. “It’s hot outside, so people are looking for air-conditioned entertainment,” said Taylor.

“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Exhibition” will be on MOSH’s second floor through Sept. 12.
