As part of the celebration for “Teen Read Week” Oct. 17-23, the Teen Services Department at the Main Library put together a contest to encourage youngsters 12-18 years old to make a two-minute video about their favorite book.
Thirty-three entries were received from throughout the Jacksonville Public Library system, which were viewed by a panel of judges that included Mayor John Peyton, State Sen. John Thrasher and Duval County Public Schools Instructional Materials Supervisor Bryant Frazier. All of the videos were presented at a reception at the Main Library where the winners were announced and received prizes provided by Fidelity Investments.
James Gordon, 12, a Kirby Smith Middle School student, won first prize and a new iPad and case for his video about “Mysterious Messages” by Gary Blackwood.
Second prize and an iPod Touch and case went to Price Baker, 17, who is home-schooled, for his presentation about “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexander Dumas. Devon Quattlebaum, 17, a Sandalwood High School student, received the third-place prize of an iPod Classic and case for his homage to “The Sight” by David Clement-Davies.
“I think the contest gave the videographers a different way to look at books,” said Keli Likins, Teen Department senior librarian. “Some of the videos were very simple and some were quite complex in terms of production. I was impressed with their work.”
