How did you get involved?
Volunteering has always been a part of my life. My parents took me along when they volunteered, talked to me about the importance of charitable giving, and even allowed me to venture to Honduras at the age of 15 to do mission work in a village where the nearest telephone was an hour away. When I went to college, I would have friends invite me to different events where they were volunteering and I would go along just to socialize. Eventually, I started finding groups that I had a personal connection with and just showed up to events to help out (typically dragging friends and family with me)!
How can someone else get involved?
Say yes. I seem to always have people approach me with interesting ways to help the community. Say yes and give what you are able to give, whether it be your time, your skills or your money!
What have you learned/achieved through the experience?
I learned that every little bit counts. We have had times when $5 made a significant difference to an organization. My husband and I also met and adopted our basset hounds due to our involvement with Suncoast Basset Rescue.
What was the last book you read or are reading?
“The Grapes of Wrath.” I never really get tired of the classics!
