• Dr. Patrick Monaghan, a professor in the University of North Florida School of Nursing, received the U.S. Department of Defense Armed Services Blood Program Lifetime Achievement Award. Monaghan, a Yulee resident, was presented the award by the Surgeon General of the U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Eric Schoomaker recently in Baltimore during the 2010 annual meeting of the American Association of Blood Banks and Cellular Therapy and Transfusion Medicine Expo.
• Calm down kids, Halloween is safe. City Council member Don Redman filed bill 2010-830 to change the date children would celebrate Halloween, moving the day of candy-collecting to Saturday instead of its scheduled Sunday this year. The bill was introduced after Redman listened to concerns from constituents and found that surrounding counties had such a plan in place. But “after much consideration,” and the fact that the Georgia-Florida game will be held the same day, Redman notified Council President Jack Webb on Monday that he would be withdrawing the bill.
• The Women Business Owners of North Florida “moment of silence” Monday evening at River City Brewing Co. was a little louder than usual as hushed members became aware of, and some amused by, “Hey Jude” by The Beatles playing through the meeting room’s sound system.
