State Attorney Angela Corey advised more than 50 members of Women Business Owners of North Florida Monday evening to be careful for their personal and financial safety as they do business.
Corey, who took office in January 2009, told the members that they needed to make careful plans about when and how they make cash deposits; to be watchful, aware and prepared when they leave their workplaces at night; to make sure they demand the proper identification and information if they accept customer checks; and to take precautions and enforce checks and balances to avoid embezzlement.
“We can lock them up, but we can’t make them pay you back,” she said.
Corey talked about her office’s role in law enforcement and its progress. Asked her opinion about the popular “Law & Order” TV series, she used the show’s format to explain probable cause, reasonable doubt and the working relationship between police and prosecutors.
“Plus,” she said, “it’s my favorite show.”
